Engaging future sustainability leaders

Ronella Group recently spent two afternoons at the University of Leicester supporting student achievement in sustainability and innovation as part of the Climate Innovation Lab.

Founder Charles Shaw was invited to speak on leadership and collaborative problem-solving, exploring how effective teamwork and clear leadership are essential in turning ambitious ideas into practical outcomes. Following the session, Charles also joined the judging panel for a university award recognising emerging talent in sustainable thinking.

The experience offered more than a platform to review student work, it provided an opportunity to engage directly with the next generation of engineers, designers and sustainability practitioners preparing to enter the sector.

Real-world insight meets academic innovation

Feedback from the programme highlighted the value of bringing practitioners into the academic environment. The organiser described this year’s Climate Innovation Lab as “our best one yet”, noting that students particularly valued sessions delivered by external speakers with real-world experience.

One student reflected:

“The innovation session stood out to me the most, especially because of the guest speakers, Roderick Williams-Young and Charles Shaw. Roderick’s talk on innovation was really insightful and showed how creative thinking can be applied to real challenges, while Charles’ session on teamwork and leadership helped me understand how strong collaboration and good leadership are key to making ideas work in practice. Hearing from both of them made the session more engaging and relevant to real-world work.”

Students also responded positively to the live questioning and panel discussion format, which encouraged deeper thinking and practical application of ideas beyond theory.

For Ronella, this kind of engagement is essential. Sustainability challenges are rarely solved in isolation, they demand cross-disciplinary collaboration, structured leadership, and the ability to translate innovation into deployment.

Bridging education and deployment

Engagement with universities forms a key part of Ronella’s long-term approach. By maintaining dialogue with academic institutions and supporting student development, Ronella aims to help bridge the gap between:

The aim is not simply to inspire students, but to encourage thinking that can scale beyond academic exercises into projects that deliver measurable, lasting impact.

As a small gesture to mark the visit and the connection made during the sessions, students were presented with Ronella mugs – a simple but symbolic reminder of the shared commitment to building more sustainable communities worldwide.

Continuing collaboration: University of Lincoln – Summer 2026

Building on this engagement, Ronella is also preparing to support a multidisciplinary employer project with the University of Lincoln in Summer 2026.

The programme will bring together groups of 6–10 students to work on a live project brief over a five week period, beginning in June 2026. Ronella will contribute to the project introduction and final presentation stages, helping shape a practical challenge that allows students to apply research, design, and strategic thinking to a real-world sustainability context.

These structured collaborations allow students to develop key skills in teamwork, research, analysis and solution design, while also exposing them to the operational realities of project development.

By continuing to engage with universities across the UK, Ronella seeks to play a constructive role in supporting future sustainability leaders, ensuring that promising ideas are paired with the leadership, collaboration and structure required to turn them into practical solutions.
